SalesUp: Sales goal tracker

Busy salespeople don't have time to track their own goals, so I designed an app that shows what's done and what's left at a glance.

Methods

  • User interviews
  • Empathy map
  • Journey map
  • Paper wireframes
  • Digital wireframes
  • Low-fidelity prototype
  • Usability testing (2 rounds)
  • High-fidelity prototype

The problem

SalesUp is an app for people inside a sales organization who need to keep track of their numbers and goals. The people I talked to were busy workers and commuters, and they didn't have time to do it.

The goal was simple to say: make it easy to see where you stand on your sales goal.

Research

I ran interviews and built empathy maps. The main group turned out to be working adults who don't have time to track daily sales goals, which matched my first guess.

Research also showed time wasn't the only thing in the way. Other obligations, other interests and parts of the job that were hard to make sense of all got in the way of keeping track. A journey map made the case for one dedicated app.

Design

I sketched each screen on paper first, then moved to digital wireframes built on what the research found. Daily and weekly goals got graphs, so you can see what's done and what's left without doing the math.

The low-fidelity prototype connected two flows: logging in, and the home page.

Usability testing

I ran two rounds of usability studies. The first, on the low-fidelity prototype, shaped the move from wireframes to mockups: I put the main menus in the navigation bar and brought the last transaction up front so it's one tap away.

The second round used the high-fidelity prototype and showed the goals page needed work. I renamed Goals to Tasks and split it into All, Active and Completed, so people could see what they'd already finished. The final prototype also added a notes page in the sidebar.
